The Trafford centre opened in 1998 is the third largest retail shopping centre in the UK. It is situated within a 45 minute drive of 10% of the UK’s population. It has an estimated 35 million visitors each year. In 2011 it was sold by its original owners for a mere £1.65 billion. At the time the single largest property acquisition in British History.
Since the emergence of online shopping and the decline in high street store sales the centre has suffered. With the recent impact of COVID 19, Intu, the organisation who own The Trafford Centre have had to call in Administrators. Can the centre be saved? ……
The man behind bringing the centre to Manchester in the first place is considering an emergency bail out. John whittaker, who is the Chairman of Peel Group, along with a real estate investment trust from Hong Kong have reportedly put a plan together for a £1billion investment to breathe new life into this retail behemoth.
